Here are a few of my top pics for 2010 (in no particular order)
Beach House - Zebra
I got this song in a free sampler from iTunes. This wasn't a song that I listened to once and instantly liked, my liking for this song grew over time. After coming acrossed it multiple times while my music was on shuffle I started appreciating the lyrics and instrumentals more and more. The song has a haunting but at the same time soulful tone to it. Also I highly recommend you check out this cover by a New York public school choir group, really impressive.
Steel Train - You and I Undercover
Josh Ritter - The Curse
In May of 2010 Josh Ritter released his album "So Runs the World Away." This album is INCREDIBLE. I highly recommend the entire album. My favorite track would be The Curse, the track Change of Time is another favorite. There is a music video for The Curse but the reason I'm not posting that video is because I really think this song should just be listened too, at least for the first time. I think the listener should make their own interpretation first. After you've listened READ THIS. That is a link to a note written by Josh Ritter about the album, he talks about where the whole idea and concept came from, it is incredible. There is also a music player on the side of that page where you can stream the whole album.
Rogue Wave - Stars & Stripes
Gold Motel - Summer House
After The Hush Sound went on hiatus lead vocalist Greta Salpeter became part of a new band called Gold Motel, they released their debut album Summer House in 2010, here they are with the title track
Local Natives - Sun Hands
I am currently obsessed with Local Natives, they released their debut album Gorilla Manor in 2010, I first heard their song Wide Eyes back in the spring, I loved it but for some reason I never listened to any of their other stuff until a couple weeks ago. The entire album is great, especially their song Sun Hands. I prefer the Studio Version but here is a live performance (which is still way great).
Don't you love his stache?
Laura Veirs - July Flame
My Top Album of 2010 would be Hellogoodbye's sophomore album. I already posted an entry devoted entirely to Hellogoodbye's 2010 album "Would it Kill You" you can access that entry HERE. I also posted two songs in that entry. But here is another favorite of mine. WIthin four days of downloading this song I had listened to it over 70 times. Obsessed much? Very much.
Hellogoodbye - Getting Old
Another favorite album of mine from 2010 would be Freelance Whales debut album Weathervanes, I did an entry on them too, you can access that HERE.
As far as soundtracks go I LOVE the soundtracks for the Twilight movies, they are filled with so much indie goodness. The soundtrack for the third movie Eclipse was released in 2010, my favorites from the soundtrack can be found HERE, HERE, & HERE
Other 2010 Favorites
Florence & The Machine - The Dog Days Are Over really bizarre music video, but it got the band a VMA.
The Northern Key - Proof (Extremely low key band, I could only find one video on youtube and it was not very good quality so not even worth linking it, google them, that song is great)
Those are just of few of my many favorites. For more Music You Need to Know About, starting January 12th, listen Wednesdays at 5 pm on Power 91.
